2012 Opportunities for Community College Faculty Professional Development

NWBIO 2012 Workshop - Rocky intertidal field trip to Rosario Beach and Shannon Point Marine Center
Friday, April 27 from Noon - 6 PM

Where: NWBIO 2012 at Everett Community College, Everett, WA
Instructors: Drs. Jude Apple and Brady Olson, Shannon Point Marine Center, Western Washington, University
The workshop and field trip to Rosario Beach and Shannon Point Marine Center will include both field and classroom components focused on marine macroalgae and will include the following activities: Lecture and classroom content of ecology of macroalgae; Field component identifying and collecting macroalgae; and Lab component pressing and archiving macroalgae samples. The workshop will also offer an overview of other interidal activities that can be incorporated into undergraduate biology, marine biology, ecology, and environmental science courses.

The field trip will depart Everett CC at noon and transit to Rosario Beach/Shannon Point Marine Center. We will return in time for evening NWBIO registration and events.

2011 Opportunities for Community College Faculty Professional Development

Teaching Seminar on Communicating Controversial Topics using Concept Mapping
Saturday, February 26th

Where: Oregon Academy of Science Meeting
Instructor: Dr. Shawn Rowe, COSEE-PP Co-Director
The presentation focuses on how concept mapping can be used with groups of students to help facilitate learning conversations that recognize differences in beliefs and opinions while not allowing those to dominate.

NWBIO 2011 Workshop - The ecology of colonial waterbirds and their impacts on the survival of juvenile salmonids in the Columbia Basin with Dr. Dan Roby
Friday, April 29 from 1 - 5PM

Where: NWBIO 2011 at Yakima Valley Community College, Yakima, WA
Instructor: Dr. Dan Roby, Professor, Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, Oregon State University.
The workshop will use information from Dr. Roby's research on the ecology of fish eating colonial waterbirds (primarily Caspian terns, double-crested cormorants, and several gull species) and their impacts on the survival of juvenile salmonids in the Columbia Basin. The workshop will include activities suitable for inclusion in community college courses. The workshop is free, however participants must register for NWBIO 2011.

2010 Opportunities for Community College Faculty Professional Development

Community College Faculty Institute: Climate change and eutrophication in coastal and marine ecosystems
August 23-26, Shannon Point Marine Center, Western Washington University, Anacortes, WA

Topics to be covered include climate change, ocean acidification, and marine water quality in Puget Sound/Salish Sea. Each participant will receive a stipend of $100 per day, room and board, and class materials. Go to the institute page or Download the Institute Flyer (PDF, 383 KB).
Review of applications will begin Wednesday, June 23, 2010 and continue on a rolling basis until the workshop is full.

Community College Faculty Institute: Recent Advances in Oceanography
July 19-23, Hatfield Marine Science Center, Oregon State University, Newport, OR

Topics to be covered include ocean acidification and global carbon cycling; Ocean Observing Systems; waves, sediment transport, and wave energy; and geological information from marine sediment cores. Each participant will receive a $500 stipend, room and board, and class materials.

OIMB Coastal Biology course
COSEE Pacific Partnerships will sponsor two Community College faculty to attend the Marine Field Studies: Coastal Biology course taught at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology in Charleston. This intensive, field-oriented course provides an overview of the physical and biological features of the major coastal habitats in Oregon, including rocky shores, sandy beaches, dunes, estuaries, headlands, and forests. Students study the important species in each habitat, exploring the ecological significance of those species, and the adaptations to the environment in which they live. Each participant will receive tuition, on-site housing, and meals at OIMB. Transportation to OIMB is the responsibility of the participant.

Mariculture in our Coastal Zones examined through Ecological Science Workshop at the 2010 Northwest Biology Instructors Organization (NWBIO) Meeting

Summer 2009 Community College Faculty Institute: Marine Biology, July 19 – 24
Oregon Institute of Marine Biology, University of Oregon, Charleston, OR.
Topics to be covered include the biology of rocky shores, estuaries, oceanic islands, the open ocean and the deep sea. Current topics and issues associated with these environments will be discussed and class, field, and laboratory activities suitable for use in community college curricula will be provided. OIMB Coastal Biology course
July 6 – 16
