Community College Faculty Institute: Recent Advances in Oceanography (Oregon)
Date: 07/19/10 - 07/23/10
Location: Hatfield Marine Science Center, Oregon State University, Newport, Oregon
Attendance: Community college faculty who teach oceanography or who are interested in developing an oceanography course, and faculty who wish to incorporate the institute topics into their science courses.

Each day of the Recent Advances in Oceanography Faculty Institute will include a presentation by scientists who study the topic, curriculum materials, including lab exercises and field activities where appropriate, that could be used in a community college course.

  • July 19 Ocean Observing Systems
  • July 20 Global Carbon Cycle, Ocean Chemistry, and Ocean Acidification
  • July 21 Plastics in the Ocean; Phosphorus: From Nutrient to Eutrophication
  • July 22 Ocean Energy
    • Seminar: Hypoxia events along the Oregon Coast
  • July 23 Visit the Hinsdale Wave Research Laboratory and the Wallace Energy Systems and Renewable Laboratory

Al Trujillo, Professor in the Department of Earth, Space, and Aviation Sciences at Palomar College and co-Director of its Oceanography Program, is co-author or contributing author for several nationally recognized college-level Earth science textbooks. Al will join us for the week to facilitate discussions about how to incorporate the information provided during the institute into the community college classroom and will give a series of ~15 minute presentations about effective teaching methods for oceanography classes.
