COSEE Role:
Marine Lab Partner

Primary COSEE Affiliation:

Other affiliations:

Interaction with COSEE Network:

I participated in the 2000 COSEE workshop. I am a former NSF COSEE Program Director (2004-2006). Since 2006 I have not participated actively, other than to develop the COSEE Pacific partnerships for SPMC with Skagit Valley College, Oak Harbor, and with Padilla Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. I have kept in touch through the newsletters and postings on the COSEE listserve.

Background with Respect to Ocean Sciences Education:

B.S. 1975 (State Univ. of New York at Stony Brook), M.S. 1978 (University of Delaware College of Marine Studies), Ph.D. 1984 ( University of California, Los Angeles). As a professor at a predominantly undergraduate institution, research and education are intimately linked in everything I do. I teach courses in oceanography and marine algae. Undergraduate students conduct research in these classes, and many also participate in my research program in algal symbiosis. I have designed new laboratory exercises for my classes using techniques developed through research projects and instrumentation. I have participated since 1990 in SPMC's Multicultural Initiative in Marine Science: Undergraduate Program (MIMSUP) as a mentor, advising student research projects (total of 20 students). I developed and completed a 3-year Science Education and Research for Undergraduates (SEARUN) program. Eighteen undergraduate students (Biology, Chemistry, Engineering Technology, Environmental Science, Physics, and Science Education majors) participated in the design and implementation of field research on coral bleaching. I routinely advise students enrolled in our REU summer program, in addition to Masters graduate students. I also developed a community outreach program (Project FLIP) that brought together scientists, educators and high school students in the study of the intertidal zone; these outreach efforts promote public awareness and appreciation of local habitats.
