Background with Respect to Ocean Sciences Education:

Dr. Jude Apple is a marine ecologist and marine science educator at Western Washington University’s Shannon Point Marine Center. Through his involvement with Shannon Point’s Public Education Initiative and COSEE-Pacific Partnerships, Dr. Apple works to broaden ocean literacy and improve public awareness of issues regarding marine and coastal ecosystems. To this end, Dr. Apple coordinates a Marine Science Teaching Institute for community college faculty, serves as an instructor for COSIA courses (Communicating Ocean Sciences to Informal Audiences), and facilitates the involvement of Shannon Point with public audiences. Dr. Apple is also involved in a number of programs that focus on experiential, inquiry-based learning and research as a teaching platform, including the NSF-funded Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program and Multicultural Initiatives in Marine Science: Undergraduate Program (MIMSUP) hosted at Shannon Point and the Native Environmental Science Internship Program at Northwest Indian College (where Dr. Apple is adjunct faculty). Dr. Apple received his Masters in marine biology from UNC Wilmington and Ph.D. in Marine and Estuarine Ecology from University of Maryland. After completing his dissertation he spent 3 years at the Naval Research Lab in Washington DC as a National Research Council postdoctoral fellow. Dr. Apple came to the Pacific Northwest in the beginning of 2008 as a research associate at Shannon Point, where he is conducting studies in plankton ecology and working with students from Northwest Indian College to investigate hypoxia and water quality in Bellingham Bay
