COSEE-PP Summer 2011 Community College Faculty Institute in Oregon

When: August 1-5, 2011
Location: Oregon Institute of Marine Biology, Charleston, OR

Each day of the will include presentations by scientists who study the topic, curriculum materials (including lab exercises and field activities where appropriate) that could be used in a community college course, and time for participants to work on developing their own curriculum products using the information and materials presented. By the end of the week, each participant should have an action plan for the use of the material in their classes or in classes they are developing. The materials that the scientists present will be available to participants for use in the classroom. Housing will be provided and participants will receive a $500 stipend ($100/day).

General structure of Institute:

  • 7:00 a.m. Breakfast in the Dining Hall
  • 8:00 a.m. Begin day
  • 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. Lunch as a group in the OIMB Dining Hall
  • 4:30 p.m. End instruction and field activities
  • 5:30- 6:00 p.m. Dinner served in the Dining Hall with after dinner discussion

Each day will include:

  • Introduction to topic
  • Current information
  • Lab/classroom activities
  • Any site/field visits to labs/ship etc.
  • Effective teaching methods
  • Discussion of how to use information for teaching

Sunday, July 31
Check in at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology (OIMB) after 4pm
5:45 p.m. Meet in OIMB Dining Hall
6:00 p.m. Welcome Dinner in the OIMB Dining Hall

Day 1. Monday, August 1 - Working with Ocean Datasets
Dr. Fred Prahl, College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences, Oregon State University

Day 2. Tuesday, August 2 - Field trip and experiments in the intertidal
Dr. Shirley Baker, Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, University of Florida
Morning – Low Tide field trip including invertebrate physiology experiments
Afternoon – conducting physiology experiments in the lab and away from the coast

Day 3. Wednesday, August 3 - Sound in the Sea - Bioacousitcs
Dr. Holger Klinck, Bioacoustics Lab,Cooperative Institute for Marine Resources Studies, Oregon State University, NOAA Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory
Basics of bioacoustics
Marine animal hearing and sounds
Current research foci and hot topics in bioacoustics
Hands-on experiment/demonstrations

4 p.m. OIMB Seminar - SAR11 and the evolution of mitochondria - ancient history
Dr. Stephen Giovannoni, Department of Microbiology, Oregon State University

Day 4. Thursday, August 4 - Subtidal and Deep Sea Biology
Dr. Craig Young and Dr. Maya Wolf, Oregon Institute of Marine Biology, University of Oregon

Day 5. Friday, August 5 - Building Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) with your students
