Background: One of the keys to communicating your work with any audience is making your science relevant and interesting. Whether you are trying to communicate to policy and decision makers, school groups, undergraduates, or public audiences, concept maps and other visual tools can help you organize your work into themes for communicating.

Description: In this workshop we introduce techniques and online tools for identifying and communicating the big ideas behind your work in ways that make it relevant and interesting without over simplifying it. Participants will identify important audiences, map out key components of their work, and develop strategies for communicating with their maps.

Participants in previous workshops have used our tools and techniques to:
• create better presentations for their graduate committees,
• plan talks and posters for scientific meetings,
• develop tools for communicating to K-12 teachers and informal educators,
• plan lectures for courses they are teaching,
• make maps to support policy makers in climate change mitigation,
• come to better understand how their work fits with their colleagues work.

Registration: Although registration is not required, we encourage you to do so at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/OSM2012 to help us better plan for the workshop. Snacks and refreshments will be provided.
