Oregon Academy of Science 2010 Special Session - "What can Phoebe tell us about the Columbia estuary and coastal waters of the Pacific northwest?"

Location: Concordia University, Portland, OR
Attendance: The session is particularly suited to community college faculty but is open to all OAS meeting participants.

Katie Rathmell, a scientist with the Center for Coastal Margin Observation and Prediction (CMOP), will be at the Oregon Academy of Science meeting to discuss the use of Phoebe, an autonomous underwater glider that collects data in the Columbia River Estuary and coastal waters of the Pacific Northwest.

General session presentation: "A glider named Phoebe: A resource for eduction and outreach"
At 9:30 AM, Katie will give an introduction to Phoebe and an overview of CMOP glider operations during a 20 minute talk in the Education Section Session 1 (see general schedule below).

Special Session: “What can Phoebe tell us about the Columbia Estuary and coastal waters of the Pacific Northwest?”
From 10:30 AM to noon, Katie will provide a more detailed look at glider data, its potential use in education, particularly in community college courses, and on career paths that students interested in this type of science might follow.

The early registration deadline for the meeting is Friday, February 12. Registrations postmarked after Feb. 12 or paid on-site will incur a $5 late fee. The registration form can be downloaded at http://www.oas.pdx.edu/meeting.
