COSEE-PP Summer 2012 Community College Faculty Institute in Washington

Biological and physical oceanography and other issues related to the marine environment
When: August 20-24, 2012
Location: Shannon Point Marine Center, Western Washington University, Anacortes, Washington
What: A faculty teaching institute to help incorporate oceanography and marine science into community college classes and curricula

This institute will bring together community college educators and research scientists who are investigating marine and coastal ecosystems. During the institute, participants will engage with researchers on an interactive, one-on-one basis, evaluate and further develop teaching materials for community college instruction, and participate in a range of experiential activities meant to strengthen the ability to bring marine science to community college classrooms.

Meals, on-site housing, and a stipend of $500 ($100/day) will be provided for all participants.

Topics to be covered:

  • Diversity and characteristics of plankton communities
  • Microbial processes in coastal and ocean ecosystems
  • Marine food-web interactions
  • Ocean and estuarine circulation
  • Grazing and predation among the plankton
  • Marine phytoplankton and harmful algae
  • Oceanography sampling methods and ocean observing systems
  • Growing and culturing phytoplankton
  • Evaluating coastal water quality and nutrient concentrations
  • Analysis of online oceanographic and water quality data

The institute will also include:

  • Lecture and teaching materials to help incorporate these topics into your own science classes;
  • Experiential lab and field activities related to these issues;
  • Group projects focused on development of lesson plans and other teaching activities tailored to your specific instructional needs.
